GRAPEFRUIT
Citrus paradisi
Grapefruit originated in Asia and it was a relatively "new" discovery and only publicly recognized as a specie in the 1800's.
The fruit is commonly grown in tropical regions with hot and damp weather such as USA, Israel, and South Africa. Similar to Sweet Orange, Grapefruit essential oil is cold-pressed from the rinds.
Despite of the relatively brief history, Grapefruit is very popular in aromatherapy. Similar to other citrus oils, it helps relieve anxiety and balance the mood. In addition, a very distinctive characteristic of Grapefruit oil is that it helps suppress appetite. A recent study showed that the scent of grapefruit essential oil increased activity in the gastric vagal nerve in rodents, resulting in lower appetite. This nerve plays an important role in stimulating the production of stomach juices needed for digestion.
